About
I’m a norwegian student of philosophy, currently working my way toward a master’s degree at the University of Oslo.
I started out in philosophy by getting obsessed with Nietzsche’s epistemological nihilism (”In reality, there are no straight lines” etc). I was (and still am) convinced that Nietzsche got it absolutely right on this, but I wasn’t able to defend myself against the accusation that this position rests on a paradox (i.e. how can the claim “there is no truth” be true?). I had to express the intuitions I’d gathered from Nietzsche in a system of thought capable of resolving this issue. And gradually, such a system actually dawned on me. The first drops of insight felt like revelation. And ever since, I’ve retained the some of the euphoria, although the system has evolved. Now, the obsession is spreading from Nietzsche through Kant and Vaihinger to the entire history of philosophy. I’d never have guessed it, but I’m even starting to like philosophers like Plato and Descartes. For some reason, I used to despise them. I guess I accepted much of Nietzsche’s arrogant and resentful perspective unquestioningly (yes, I admit it, he was in fact quite resentful himself).
About this blog: It’s for my personal use. I’ll use it for whatever I feel like. But I’ll try to write some philosophy-related posts now and then. Most will be in english, as I’m practicing for my academic career, but there’ll be some exceptions, so if you don’t read norwegian, you should subscribe to the “in english” category rather than the whole thing.
“Demring”, the title of the blog, is norwegian for “dawn”. Originally, it referred to nothing in particular, I just liked the word. But as I’ve made it my own, it’s only right that it be given some semblance of a deeper meaning. The best thing I’ve come up with yet is that it can signify my way to philosophical enlightenment. Kinda cheesy, but it works for me!
